Syahida Farhan Azha, Ph.D. student, beating all other engineering contestants in the Three Minutes Thesis taking place at the USM's Dewan Budaya in Penang.

The Three Minute Thesis or in short, 3MT is a research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland, Australia. All doctoral students competing in the event were given only three minutes to present a compelling oration on their theses as well as the impact either towards the society or environment. 3MT is an exercise in trivializing or "dumbing down" research, at the same time challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries so that they can be presented concisely to non-specialist audience.

Three categories namely; Science & Technology, Engineering and Social Sciences have taken place in the competition this year. 40 contestants from all USM campuses have been selected to take part in each category. The best three contestants will be chosen by the judges to represent USM to the Malaysian 3MT Competition at the national level in May 2017. The best two contestants at the national level competition will then represent Malaysia at the Asia Pacific 3MT Competition in Brisbane, Australia this October.
